Your vehicle should never leak fluid outside of minimal water coming from the air conditioning. If you see fluid coming from your Mercedes-Benz, do not wait, we are ready to serve you today.
There are several reasons as to why your transmission may be leaking:
Transmission Pan Gasket
The gasket that keeps transmission fluid from leaking can deteriorate over time especially when it is exposed to large amounts of heat. If the gasket is worn out, then the fluid will leak out in small amounts known as seepage. This can escalate quickly if not caught early.
Transmission Drain Plug
A transmission pan contains a drain plug to keep transmission fluid in. The drain plug can fail if it gets stripped or is put on too tight. This will allow fluid to seep through. It is important to have professionals like us here at Mercedes-Benz to ensure the drain plug is put back on correctly.
Cracked or Rusted Transmission Pan
Your transmission pan can withstand a great deal but over time it can crack from being hit by outside forces like rocks or gravel as it is located under the car. It can also rust over time.
Both can lead to fluid leaking from the transmission pan and if the damage is severe enough, all the fluid can be released rapidly which is extremely unsafe.
Dried Out Seals
The transmission pan has seals that are designed to hold fluid in place. After years of vehicle usage, the seals may dry out or harden causing the transmission fluid to leak out.
Cooling Lines
The transmission cooler lowers the temperature of the transmission fluid to keep it from getting too hot. If the cooling lines are damaged or wear out after years of usage, the lines will break, and transmission fluid will leak out.
Torque Converter
The torque converter that is installed on the automatic transmission is used to disconnect the transmission from the engine. If the torque converter cracks or is damaged, the fluid will leak out.
You should never drive your vehicle if the transmission is leaking. There are many ways to identify if it is a transmission fluid leak, including examining the color, consistency, and smell of the fluid. Also, if the fluid is leaking from the front or middle of the vehicle, it is likely coming from your transmission.
